Spot price FAQ

Understand how spot prices are formed, how they differ from futures markets, and how they are used in bullion pricing.

The spot price is the current market price for immediate settlement of a precious metal. It is the global reference point used by dealers and exchanges before local premiums, fabrication, and delivery costs are applied.

Spot reflects immediate delivery pricing, while futures prices are contracts for delivery at a later date. Futures include market expectations, interest rates, storage, and timing factors, so they can trade above or below spot.

No single company sets it. Spot is discovered continuously across major global markets through live buy and sell activity, including OTC bullion markets and exchange-linked liquidity.

Prices react to supply and demand, currency moves, interest-rate expectations, central bank commentary, geopolitical risk, and macroeconomic data releases. Even small shifts in these inputs can move intraday pricing.

Retail buy and sell prices include a premium or discount around spot. That spread covers minting, logistics, hedging, inventory carrying costs, and operating service costs.

The underlying international reference is usually quoted in USD. NZD spot reflects that same metal value converted through the live NZD/USD exchange rate, so currency movements can impact NZD pricing even when USD metal prices are steady.
